Analysis

Head-to-head record 1:0

German bomber Philipp Petzschner will play Russian hero Marat Safin in the opening round.

Safin is one of the most talented players of this decade but the lack of consistency is described as his ultimate weakness. He is known for his emotional outbursts during matches, and has smashed numerous rackets. He frequently verbally berates himself for lost points and this usually leads to even deeper crisis. With Marat you never know but it seems he is not fully focused on tennis anymore. He has said that he will most likely retire from professional tennis after the 2009 season which indicates he already has other priorities in his life. On the other hand, he is a player of exceptional qualities and the world of tennis would miss him if he retires. Safin's game is based around his physical size and strength to outplay his opponents generally with big strokes and pace. He has excellent footwork and footspeed on all surfaces unlike other players of his height. He possesses a very powerful all-round game that is capable of defeating most opponents on virtually any surface. His mental condition is a key point for his game and even if he currently doesn’t look all right, we don’t think he should be an underdog against German today. Safin began his hardcourt season by making it to the quarter-finals of the LA Tennis Open (his first quarter-final of the season) where he lost to Tommy Haas. He then lost in the first round of the U.S. Open, to Austrian Jurgen Melzer. His form is not ideal but it could be worse though. He will play German Philipp Petzschner whose latest results also weren´t convincing. He is known for a good serve and should feel fine on this surface, but it doesn’t justify him to be a favourite against Marat. We think the chances are 50:50 and anything above 2 is thus good enough for us.
