Analysis

Head-to-head record 2:1

Two Frenchmen will fight for the third round spot in Metz. Mathieu is going to defend last year´s final here and Gicquel will be the first hurdle on his way. Marc Gicquel loves playing indoors and especially Metz is his favourite venue. He has a good record here and we think he will be competitive this year too. He is good at serve and volley tennis which is perfectly suited to this surface and despite of unconvincing latest results, he was impressive in the first round here against qualifier Valent. Mathieu has, on the contrary, no match under the belt and he is first up since 2009 US Open. He is known for being able to hit heavy groundstrokes from both wings but he is a defensive-minded player who rally on great movement and baseline play. That is why he prefers the slower surfaces. He played a final here last year but we are still not convinced of his indoor abilities. We expect a tight match and see some value on Gicquel´s side.
