Analysis

Head-to-head record 2:0

Croatia and Czech Republic meet for the first time in Davis Cup and we will start with the opening match. Croatian giant Ivo Karlovic will face experienced Czech Radek Stepanek and we like the chances of home player. It may be a surprise for many of you as we have often criticized Karlovic for lack of variety and poor movement. His primary strategy is serve-and-volley, and he is considered one of the best servers on tour. His height enables him to consistently serve with high speed and unique trajectory. This style of play is suitable for fast surfaces, particularly grass. It is not a secret that he doesn’t like clay but on the other hand, his matches are often tight even on clay and we expect a very close match today. Some breakers are very likely to be played as it is enormously difficult to break Karlovic´s serve and at the same time, his receiving skills are limited though. His opponent, Radek Stepanek is a big-hearted player with great fighting spirit. He has focused on being a better singles player while still playing top-level doubles. He is known for his after the shot grunting, his over the top celebrations and for being an excellent team player. However, his latest results weren´t impressive and we doubt he will be able to take the serves of his opponent today. Like we said, we expect a tight match and see 50% chances on both sides. Karlovic will be pushed by the home crowd and odds above 2.2 are worth trying for us.
