Young Slovenian Luka Gregorc has qualified for the main event in Tokyo by winning two qualifying matches, both of them in straight sets. Even if his opponents weren’t the holder of big names, he performed well and showed that his as shown appearance in New Haven wasn’t just a coincidence. At the 2008 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament, Gregorc made a monumental run to the semifinals by beating many higher-ranked players. First, the Slovenian defeated fellow qualifier Ramon Delgado of Paraguay, before beating fourteenth seed Jose Acasuso 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round. Then, he beat Ivo Karlovic, the tournament's second seed, in the third round, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2, before continuing his unexpected run by beating highly-seeded Andreas Seppi, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. His amazing feat was ended by Marin Cilic in the semifinals. His self confidence must be sky high at present and we are looking forward to the next match he is going to play. Unfortunatelly, his ranking wasn´t good enough to allow him to participate in US Open qualifiers but it is good to see him back in action at least here in Tokyo. His opponent will be Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei. Lu is just an average player in our eyes but his current form is not bad at all. Lu participated at the Beijing Olympics with a first round match against Andy Murray, currently ranked world number four. Despite the difficulties of the match he shocked the audiences by defeating Murray in two straight sets to reach the second round. Lu continued his winning streak at the Olympics by defeating Agustin Calleri of Argentina to advance to the fourth round. He eventually lost to Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the third round. However, the inconvincible US Open performance followed after the Beijing success and Lu was eliminated by Cipolla in the second round. He is an inconsistent player who likes to play on Asian hard courts but his next opponent won´t be the easy nut to crack. We like Gregorc´s chances and will stay with him at the odds above 1.8.
