Analysis

Head-to-head record 1:1

Italian Flavia Pennetta will face Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine in the second round. Both players are having the career best season. Bondarenko had the bad start of the year but her current form is stellar. She played 4 hard court tournaments in a row and has a great record of 15-4 from these tournaments. During her run, she pulled off the biggest singles win of her career so far at the 2009 Rogers Cup held in Toronto, by beating Venus Williams, the third seed at that event, in three sets. She has also defeated Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva at the 2009 Toray Pan Pacific Open. In the first round here, she got past Kirilenko in 3 sets. Flavia Penetta became Italy's first top 10 female player and her results during the season were really impressive. When she moved to Asia, her form suddenly disappeared and she was demolished by Vinci last week in Tokyo. Here in Beijing, she got through the first round but she played unknown home player and she will face much harder opponent now. There is a bright future ahead younger Bondarenko sister and no female player she wouldn’t be able to defeat. Pennetta will definitely be hard nut to crack but we will try Bondarenko here.
