Analysis

Head-to-head record 1:0

Los Angeles 2007 Peng-Shvedova 6:3,6:4

Yaroslava Shvedova, the Russian qualifier will face Shuai Peng of China in the first round.

Shvedova adopted an offensive style of play which is particularly determined by her somatotype. She try to win the point by hitting winners from the back of the court, attacking with fast balls that the opponent cannot reach or return properly. She has solid serve and forehand and she should feel well on hardcourts. Shvedova made some good results this year – she defeated players like Stosur, Hantuchova or Jankovic.

Shuai Peng is a solid player and her tennis skills are outstanding. The only problem she has is lack of consistency. She is able to destroy a world-class player on one day and to be defeated by huge underdog on the next day. She hits the ball very cleanly, especially off her backhand. Her compact strokes allow her to change easily, and she likes to hit the ball down the line from both sides. Her weakness is her serve, with a ball toss that sometimes drifts too far to the left. Her movement is also not the quickest, and that can put her in defensive positions given limited reach when drawn out wide.

We expect a very tight match, chances are 50% on both sides and odds above 2 are therefore worth trying.
