Analysis

Head-to-head record 0:0

Home player Martin Verkerk will face Frenchman Roger-Vasselin in the first round. Martin Verkerk is an experienced Dutch who always had big ambitions at home. As a relatively unknown player, he had a brilliant run at the French Open in 2003, reaching the final before losing to Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero. Along the way, he beat experienced clay court players Carlos Moya and Guillermo Coria. Verkerk's game is based on booming serves and big backhands. His unexpected run at the French Open as an underdog and expressive on-court antics made him very popular in the Netherlands. However, Verkerk has not reproduced similar results since then, never reaching past the third round in subsequent Grand Slams. He has had a long lay off due to various injuries and sicknesses including glandular fever but gradually has started to come back to competition since 2006. However, his results are inconsistent and he is currently ranked as a World No.270. But we are still happy to support him against Frenchman whose YTD record is far from being even average. Vasselin is a challenger level player but his results on this circuit are hardly worth mentioning. He has never got past the second round at clay challengers this year and we can hardly expect he will show anything more in here. We believe Verkerk will be competitive on the home soil and the name of his opponent gives him pretty good chance.
