Analysis

Head-to-head record 3:0

Donald Young will play his country mate Bobby Reynolds in the first round in California. Young is 3-0 up in their head-to-head record but we don’t think he is that much better. He was the recipient of much press, heralding him as the next great US male tennis player after great success on the junior circuit but he struggled in his first years on the pro tour. He currently has a career singles record of 4-17. He has had a dismal start on the ATP level and his handlers were criticized for pushing him too fast. Young was ranked the as the World No.1 junior player and was the youngest male to win a Grand Slam Junior Event. This year has been better for him but he is still not meeting expectations. In the Australian Open, Donald lost in the 1st round to Michael Berrer in 4 sets. There were much higher hopes for Young as he made it to the quarterfinals of the tennis tournament in Memphis where he defeated Warburg and Falla before losing in a tough match to Bjorkman. His opponent will be much more experienced country man, Robert “Bobby” Reynolds. He is currently ranked 106th in the world singles rankings and 2008 season wasn’t bad for him at all. He played several tough matches against world top player such as Stepanek or Fish and managed to defeat i.a. Malisse. He came through the qualifiers defeating Recouderc and Kendrick and we think he shouldn’t be underdog for the first-round match. We see the chances of 50:50 and odds above 2 could be taken here. Both players like this surface and played some solid tennis lately so we expect this match to be very tight and surely just few points will decide.
