| Analysis | Head-to-head record 2:2 We already advised exactly the same pick at 2007 US Open. Mardy Fish lost to his Spanish opponent in 5 sets but he wasn’t lucky there at all. He was a break up in the fifth set but Robredo made some unbelievable points then and less-experienced American totally lost concentration. Mardy Fish is a typical American player of young generation. He is good at serve, plays attacking tennis and strong forehand shots. He is very self-confident and met a great form lately (played some solid matches at 2008 Hopman Cup). Spaniard is a typical baseliner with great movement and technique but he hasn´t been playing in a good shape on American hard courts at the end of last season and lost all his matches on Australian soil this year as well. He outplayed Misha Zverev of Germany in the first round (3-2) while Fish defeated Boris Pashanski pretty easily in 4 sets. Robredo´s performance was far from being impressive and even when he is more experienced and higher ranked player than Mardy Fish, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is a favourite. We expect a tight battle again with some tie-breaks to be played and we think that the odds on these guys should be at least equal. We still don’t understand why Fish is considered to be an underdog in this match. Fast hard court is an advantage for young American and if he plays his best tennis, he will be able to get into the third round. |
