Analysis

Head-to-head record 4:1

American rocket James Blake will face Tommy Haas of Germany in a battle for quarterfinal spot in New York. Blake hasn´t been too convincing at the tournament so far and played really headlong against ATP tour veterans Koubek and Santoro. He produced incredibly high number of unforced errors in both matches and had a very low percentage of the first serve. But that is just his amazing hit or miss style of play - he shoots killing shots almost from everywhere trying to finish the rally as soon as possible. This is something he has been very successful with during his past US Open appearances. When he has his day, he is almost unbeatable. Numerous unforced errors are usually accompanied by many winners and he is always much more confident in front of his home crowd. He is enjoying the support he has and wants to play a spectacular tennis all the time he is on court. Furthermore, he played several great tournaments on US soil before US Open (reaching finals in L.A. and Cincy and winning the tournament in New Haven). Tommy Haas is an experienced German player but his current results aren´t so impressive. He dropped sets to low-ranked players Darcis and Pretzchner and won a tight battle against Grosjean in the fifth set. We just think he is an underdog against Blake, especially then on the court American loves. If Blake stays consistent and doesn´t play needlessly agressive, he should prevail in this match. Odds aren´t great but anything above 1.5 could be taken here.
